Samuel stands with his staff and points to the torn edge of his robe as King Saul, still dressed for battle, pleads beside him. Behind them, spared cattle fill the camp, recalling Saul’s disobedience after the campaign against Amalek. The torn garment becomes the prophetic sign: as Saul has torn Samuel’s robe, the Lord has torn the kingdom of Israel from Saul and given it to a better neighbor.
